Why Iowa Healthy Links?

Chronic diseases and conditions, as well as disabilities resulting from injuries sustained in mishaps such as falls, disproportionately affect older Americans. The situation is becoming ever more critical as the huge Boomer generation moves into later ages. Fortunately, there exists a large body of scientific evidence on the efficacy of low-cost self-care programs that can reduce older adults’ risk of disease, disability, and injury. These “evidence-based” programs empower older people to take more control of their own health through lifestyle and behavior changes.

What makes the Iowa Healthy Links CDSMP, MOB, and EF workshops effective?

It is the process in which the program is taught. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

The Iowa Healthy Links workshops will not conflict with existing programs or treatment. It is designed to enhance regular treatment and disease-specific education such as Better Breathers, cardiac rehabilitation, or diabetes instruction. In addition, many people have more than one chronic condition. The program is especially helpful for these people, as it gives them the skills to coordinate all the things needed to manage their health, as well as to help them keep active in their lives.
